Sub-inspector is the lowest ranking officer who can file a charge sheet in court under the Indian Penal of Code. The subordinates can only investigate a case on behalf of the sub-inspector and cannot file a charge sheet. Sub-inspector ranking is above an Assistant sub-inspector and below the inspector.
Candidates, who have high educational qualifications than other low ranking police officers, are directly selected for the post of sub-inspector of police.

Eligibility
To become a sub-inspector, candidates must apply for SI Examination first. This exam is conducted by the Staff Selection Commission.
- Graduates in any discipline with 50% marks from a recognized university /Institute
- Candidate must be a Citizen of India
- Candidates must have a Height of 170 cm with Chest of 80-85 cm
- In the case of the Delhi Police post, the candidate is required to submit a valid Driving License for LMV (Motorcycle and Car) for PET tests and if not the candidate will not be allowed to undergo the PTE test
